If You’re in a Twelve-Step Program

by Shannon on December 8, 2009

The Food & Fitness Journal works with all food plans.

The Positive Portions Food & Fitness Journal works with all food plans.

For those of us in food-related 12-step programs, The Positive Portions Food & Fitness Journal can offer an additional supportive tool that can enhance our programs.

This food diary can adapt to whatever 12-step program we’re in, whether that’s Overeaters Anonymous (OA), Compulsive Eaters Anonymous (CEA)-HOW, or Food Addicts Anonymous.

The Positive Portions Food & Fitness Journal complements the philosophy of 12-step programs by offering a holistic approach to total wellness that goes beyond just weight loss and physical fitness. It works with any food plan and is not a religious, nutritional, or calorie-counter book. Since it’s a 6-month food journal with a page for each day, it supports the 12-step “one day at a time” philosophy.

Inspiration and Accountability

The Positive Portions Food & Fitness Journal has a two-page layout that addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of those seeking wellness. This two-page design provides the inspiration and accountability that are crucial to recovery from eating disorders and food addiction. On the right-side page, we can write down our daily food plans, and on the left-side page, we can read uplifting quotations on themes such as healthy habits, faith, goal-setting, perseverance, coping with setbacks, and the value of a support network on the left-side page.

Modify to Fit Your Program

However our food addictions manifest—binge eating, bulimia, or anorexia—The Food & Fitness Journal can adapt to our individual programs of recovery. (For information on eating disorders, click here.)

We can modify the journal to fit our needs. For example, if we’re not focusing on specific food composition, we can leave the sections blank that enable us to fill in calories, fat, and fiber components. If exercise is not part of our programs, we can use the My Daily Activity section to document meetings and outreach calls. Or perhaps we’ll want to use those lines to write down feelings, challenges and triumphs.

The food diary page has sections for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Those of us who eat snacks can write them down under the chart or using the lines in the activity section.

We can use The Food & Fitness Journal to enhance our 12-step program of recovery, one meal and one day at a time.
