The True Meaning of a “Healthy Diet”

by Shannon on June 27, 2010

It is important to understand what the term healthy diet plan means to each individual.

A healthy diet is one in which you eat the food you love.

Most people when asked what the term means will think only about consuming salads without dressing and eating toasts made from whole grain breads and not eating any butter. In other words the mind will conjure up visions of eating plain and boring foods day after day.

But, it need not be like that because you can make your diet more interesting without sacrificing on any health benefits.

In fact, the right kind of health diet plan will not have to be a boring plan that involves eating fat free foods or even those foods that are low in calorie count and which are bland and quite tasteless. As a matter of fact it is possible to eat tasty snacks and you can also enjoy a variety of dishes that help you achieve the twin objectives of eating healthy and eating interesting foods.

You only need to start off the plan by looking at a food pyramid and then find out which foods from this pyramid can help you achieve a healthier body. To get more options you should search over the net to find out from the many different sites what foods are good for you and which recipes you should make use of to create the right kind of healthy but enjoyable foods.

A healthy diet plan does not mean having to fit your body into a straight jacket. Instead it means eating healthy foods which in turn involves avoiding extreme actions and instead you have to focus on consuming healthy foods and being sensitive to the needs of your body.

Hi Shannon I seen your story tonight on Fox 11 and it blew me away. Do you write down the caloric intake as well?

Hi Sabrina, I’m glad you liked the story. I have tracked my caloric intake in the past but I don’t at the moment. (Now, I just weigh and measure my food and write it down like you saw on TV.) When I was tracking my calories, I found it to be very enlightening as it gave me a clear picture of the content of what I was eating (carbs, protein, etc.) and I was able to adjust my food as needed. For example, I saw my fat intake was way too high. Whether or not to track calories and/or nutritional value is very individual – I advise people to do what works best for them. If counting calories helps you, then do it. If not, don’t.

Okay thanks. That sounds good. I don’t think I really want to burn myself out and make myself feel like I need to constanty write things like calories down, but my feelings and the food I eat has always made me feel better. But thanks for the information and inspiration. You’re amazing and you’ve come so far, congratulations!

Your story really got to me, it is exactly me in everyway. I need help, I @ one time had lost 30 pounds & was doing so well. I wrote everything down. Not feelings though. I love food so much it is my best friend. I want to control it, not it control me.

Hi Reajeanne, I definitely relate to food being your best friend. In my book, I talk about finding other ways to find comfort (or as you put it, other “best friends”) rather than eating. And one of the best ways I was able to replace food as a best friend was to turn to people, journal, and exercise. If you look on the Resources page, there are links to some support groups you might find helpful – you don’t have to try to do this alone. Food is a tough one – we need all the help we can get!

Hi Elizabeth, I know exactly how you feel about not knowing where to start. Trying to get and stay healthy is very overwhelming with so many options out there. The first thing I would suggest is for you to get a food plan that is right for you. I worked extensively with a nutritionist who put together a plan for me, including which supplements I needed to take. It was a well-worth-it investment in time and money. The second thing I would suggest is to get support. On the Resources page of this website, there are links to some support groups that you may find useful. And third thing (and most important) is to not give up hope – if I can get healthy and fit, anyone can – including you :-) Please let me know if this answers your questions and if there is anything else I can do to help support you on your journey.
