A few weeks ago I posted a challenge to break an unhealthy eating practice. Wayne V. of Torrance, CA, not only accepted the challenge but broke his addiction to red licorice and other sweets, started exercising and practicing portion control, and ended up losing 14 pounds! Here is Wayne’s story:
I am often reminded of my early childhood growing up with both of my grandmas next door to each other. It was wonderful growing up with so much love, especially when I got hurt, whether it was hurt feelings or something physical, like a scraped knee. My grandmas would fuss over me and soothe my hurts with a treat (cookie, candy, tortilla…etc.). I cherished those moments.
Fast forward to the present day and the Break a Bad Eating Habit Challenge. I have the most respect and admiration for Shannon and what she has done with The Positive Portions Food & Fitness Journal. When she sent out this recent challenge to pick one thing that we would try to give up, I was hesitant at first but something inside said to give it a try.
I realized I had gotten into the habit of eating a two-pound bag of red licorice every couple of days. My challenge was to stop this “mindless addiction.”
I had to revisit my past to understand where my addiction had come from. I now found myself reliving those past moments of that little boy whom my grandmas were nurturing with food. I was trying to recapture those feelings, and so the challenge opened my eyes to the realization I had to make a change in my life. Being an obsessive-compulsive person, this was my challenge to give up the licorice and find a replacement for that feeling of comfort that my grandmas gave so freely.
I am blessed to be surrounded by a group of friends and family who love me very much. I am also part of a recovery program for another substance and I applied the principals of that program to my addiction to red licorice.
With the help of my Higher Power, I am happy to report that, as of this writing, I have been licorice-free for almost three weeks and have removed all candy and sweets from my diet. I try and watch what goes in my mouth and also to practice portion control.
I have also made a commitment to be more active and have taken up walking again with a commitment to 30 minutes a day on M-W-F. I am benefiting already as I have lost 14 lbs and my energy level has picked up.
I am a positive person and so participating in this positive approach to my “mindless addiction” has created for me a new adventure into my ever joyful life!
